Enhancing the exploration capabilities of wide-area electromagnetic methods

On October 20, the Sichuan Institute of Geophysical Exploration held an exchange and discussion meeting in Chengdu with a delegation of seven members, including Professor Li Diquan and his team from the academician He Jishan’s group at Central South University, who were visiting the institute. Attending the meeting were Zhang Guangda, Party Branch Secretary, Chairman of the Board, and General Manager of the Institute of Geophysical Exploration; Yu Changheng, Deputy General Manager and Chief Financial Officer; Gu Zhiwen, Deputy General Manager and Chief Engineer; as well as heads of relevant departments and technical personnel.

At the meeting, Zhang Guangda, representing the Institute of Geophysical Exploration, extended a warm welcome to Professor Li Diquan and his delegation and provided a brief update on the key collaborative projects between the two sides in recent times. Subsequently, Gu Zhiwen presented to the academician team a PowerPoint presentation titled “Summary of 2019–2021 Exploration Results for Shale Gas Detection in the Changning Block Based on Wide-Field Electromagnetic Method,” introducing the major achievements made by the Institute of Geophysical Exploration over the past three years in conducting wide-field electromagnetic surveys in the Changning block. First, an effective wide-field electromagnetic data acquisition technology system suitable for low-resistivity shale gas exploration in the southern Sichuan region has been established, meeting the geological requirements for detecting low-resistivity target formations of shale gas. Second, interpretation methods and comprehensive research findings from wide-field electromagnetic surveys for low-resistivity shale gas exploration in the southern Sichuan region have been developed, providing strong support for the deployment and development of shale gas resources. Third, through exploring the relationship between apparent resistivity from wide-field electromagnetic surveys and predicted gas content in developed well areas, a preliminary prediction system for electrical parameters used in evaluating shale gas production capacity based on wide-field electromagnetic methods has been established.

Professor Li Diquan expressed his appreciation for the work achievements of the Geophysical Exploration Institute, noting that the Institute’s integration of wide-area electromagnetic methods with geology is highly significant and that its research capabilities place it at the forefront of the wide-area electromagnetic exploration industry. At the request of Academician He Jishan, Professor Li Diquan, on behalf of the academician’s team, introduced to the Institute’s leadership and specialized technical personnel the “high-precision multi-dimensional multi-component electromagnetic dynamic detection” technology as well as the team’s latest scientific and technological achievements and equipment. He stated that Academician He Jishan’s team will continue to engage in deepened scientific research cooperation with the Geophysical Exploration Institute on wide-area electromagnetic exploration in the southern Sichuan region.

This exchange and symposium received unanimous approval from both sides, which expressed their commitment to continuing to deepen cooperation in areas such as instrument R&D, talent exchange, and the submission of standards and specifications, thereby further enhancing R&D innovation capabilities and achieving win-win outcomes.
