“Strive for the honor of our motherland, and cheer on geophysical exploration”—Wide-area electromagnetic monitoring of fracturing at the Changning H32 platform
The plan for the year lies in spring.
While everyone was still immersed in the joyful atmosphere of the Spring Festival celebrating the Year of the Rabbit, the Geophysical Exploration Institute had already embarked on its first major wide-area electromagnetic fracturing monitoring project of the new year—the fracturing monitoring for the Changning H32 platform. This platform is designed to fracture a total of 10 wells and bears the heavy responsibility of boosting gas production in 2023. The planned construction period runs from January 14 to May 1. For the first time, this platform will employ dual-fracturing units and a new construction technique. Given the complex geological conditions on-site—characterized by well-developed fractures and faults—carrying out wide-area electromagnetic fracturing monitoring here poses a significant challenge.
The key to a day lies in the morning.
In the early morning, in the mountainous fields, the “box” connects to the M line and receives power from the transmitter; it then links up with the N line. The large screen in the command center is already displaying the live feed. Both the line-inspection personnel and the back-end interpretation staff have taken their positions. As the ear-splitting roar of the fracturing truck echoes through the air, the intense fracturing operation officially gets underway. Meanwhile, geophysical exploration technicians promptly kick off their day’s monitoring work amid the crisp, chilly morning breeze.

The construction site features complex terrain, and rain or fog often sets in unexpectedly. From the cable-laying team and the receiving team to the transmitting station and the on-site command center—spanning from the foot of the mountain to its summit—the project team is stationed at three separate camps. From monitoring the initial fracturing stage all the way to the completion of the final stage, each team works in close coordination to jointly accomplish the platform’s monitoring tasks.
The east wind is mighty, ushering in a new journey of vigorous advancement; with hearts united and strength pooled, we set sail with determination. Thanks to orderly on-site organization, seamless cooperation, effective communication, and robust technical support from the backend, as of now, this project has successfully completed monitoring at six wells. The wide-area electromagnetic fracturing monitoring technology has earned recognition from professionals across various fields. The staff of the Geophysical Exploration Institute have been widely praised for their rigorous work ethic and conscientious, responsible approach. At this critical juncture—when the race begins immediately and we’re fully committed to rapid, high-quality production—Sichuan’s resource geophysical explorers will keep up the good work, dedicating themselves wholeheartedly to applying geophysical exploration technologies extensively in oil and gas field development.
