Zhang Guangming from the Geophysical Exploration Institute has been awarded a provincial-level commendation, adding another outstanding achievement to the institute’s record in geological disaster rescue efforts.

Recently, the Sichuan Provincial Geological Disaster Prevention and Control Command issued a notice titled “On Commending Units and Individuals with Outstanding Achievements in Sichuan Province’s Geological Disaster Prevention and Control Work in 2024.” Zhang Guangming, a senior engineer at the Geophysical Exploration Institute, was awarded the title of “Outstanding Individual in Sichuan Province’s Geological Disaster Prevention and Control Work” for his exceptional performance in geological disaster rescue operations.

Emergency Rescue for the August 21 Flash Flood Disaster in Jinyang County, Liangshan Prefecture

Following the flash flood disaster on August 21 in Jinyang County, Liangshan Prefecture, the Geophysical Exploration Institute received notification and promptly responded. Zhang Guangming stepped forward, leading a team of 12 technicians equipped with specialized instruments, and rushed to the scene overnight. Upon arrival, Zhang Guangming immediately organized his team to conduct geological surveys and analyze the terrain and environmental conditions. Working closely with the on-site command center, they decided to employ ground-penetrating radar and transient electromagnetic methods to detect buried prefabricated houses and locate the missing persons. Although the water-rich debris layers limited the effective detection depth to only about 3 meters during the survey, Zhang Guangming actively led his team in collecting and processing data from 101 georadar measurement points and 119 transient electromagnetic measurement points. Although this geophysical exploration effort provided limited guidance for subsequent rescue operations, the sense of responsibility and dedication demonstrated by Zhang Guangming and his team are truly commendable.

Kangding 8.3 Flash Flood and Debris Flow Emergency Rescue

During the rescue efforts following the “Kangding 8.3 Flash Flood and Debris Flow” disaster, the on-site situation was extremely critical. A large number of flammable, explosive, and hazardous chemical substances—potential sources of danger—were buried by the debris flow, and electromagnetic interference was intense. As a key technical expert, Zhang Guangming led his team to arrive at the scene at the earliest possible moment. Faced with this complex and harsh environment, he leveraged his profound professional knowledge and extensive practical experience to propose a “networked, multi-parameter, three-dimensional joint detection technology” solution. Under his leadership, team members braved extreme difficulties and worked continuously for 12 hours under scorching heat, precisely identifying the locations where all explosive hazards were buried as well as their affected areas. This provided crucial support for the safe implementation of subsequent rescue operations and the smooth construction of emergency access routes, effectively preventing serious secondary disasters and ensuring the safety of rescue personnel and the smooth progress of the rescue efforts.

This recognition not only serves as a high commendation of Zhang Guangming’s professional competence and dedication, but also highlights the Geophysical Exploration Institute’s outstanding contributions to geological hazard prevention and control. Moving forward, Zhang Guangming will continue to play a leading role as a technical backbone, and the Geophysical Exploration Institute will take this opportunity to strengthen technological research and development as well as team building, thereby enhancing its capacity for geological hazard prevention and control and continuing to make sustained contributions to safeguarding the lives and property of the people and promoting the development of the geological hazard prevention and control sector.
